| Currently, Alternative Horizons services include:
¨ 24-hour Crisis Hotline: staffed entirely by volunteer advocates, who receive 27 hours of training before staffing the hotline, provides: crisis intervention, follow-up peer counseling, advocacy, information and referrals.
¨ Court Advocacy: a paid advocate is available to work with a victim/survivor in the criminal justice system every afternoon that court is in session: offering assistance in criminal cases, obtaining protection orders, filing victim’s compensation claims, explaining the criminal justice process, and providing general support. This service began in 1997.
¨ Support Groups: AH sponsors two support groups per week for adult, female survivors facilitated by a Licensed Professional Counselor with specialized training in domestic violence and sexual assault. These groups offer support, encourage individuation by the participants, explain the power and control dynamics of intimate partner violence, and empower the participants to take charge of their own lives. This service began in 1986. In 2001, AH began offering weekly Spanish support groups facilitated by the Latina Outreach Coordinator.
¨ Latina and Native American Outreach: to improve accessibility of AH services to the Native American and Latino/Hispanic communities, the organization has a paid staff member who are both bilingual and bicultural. They provides translation, advocacy, information and referral, and crisis intervention. This service began in 1997 serving the Latino/Hispanic community and expanded in 2005.
¨ Legal Project: AH contracts with a local attorney to provide legal representation to survivors in divorce and child custody cases. This project began in 1996.
¨ Community Education: general educational presentations within the community; a teen dating violence prevention curriculum targeting youth groups and middle, high and college students; and Workplace Violence presentations to employers.
